YONKERS, N.Y. — More than a dozen New York firefighters were injured battling a fast-spreading blaze that damaged four rowhomes and left nearly 100 people displaced on Sunday.
Yonkers firefighters responded to the blaze that reportedly started on a mattress in a backyard of one of the homes, then quickly spread to three other homes housing a total of 30 families, including 37 children, according to NBC New York. Eventually, every firefighter in the city was called to the scene to help put out the fire.
Officials said it was the hottest day of the year so far in Yonkers as firefighters fought the inferno. All of the residents were safely evacuated, with only one resident suffering minor injuries. A total of 13 firefighters were injured, with many of the injuries being heat-related.
One witness said the yard where the fire started was filled with mattresses and garbage bags. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
