RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Riverside Fire Department Capt. Tim Strack, president of the city’s Firefighter’s Association and a veteran firefighter, has died, officials announced Sunday.

“During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions of the firefighters here in Riverside, in California, and throughout our nation,” the city said in a statement.

Strack, 53, who was a firefighter for 28 years, was president of the association’s Local 1067 since 2002.

Matt Mathis, the chapter’s 2nd vice president, described him as a “giant” in union politics.

He said Strack worked alongside him on legislation in California to remove flame-retardant chemicals in furniture known for causing cancer, as well as federal laws that would provide healthcare benefits to September 11 first responders.

“I wouldn’t even be able to put a number on the amount of people whose lives he’s made better because of his dedication to what we do,” Mathis said.

Strack leaves behind his wife Wendy, and three children, Madeline, Isabella and Justin.

City officials did not immediately provide details on Strack’s death. Independent news agency OC Hawk reported he died Saturday and that he was honored by a procession of law enforcement and fire agency personnel during a procession as his body was transported.

“The passing of Captain Strack is a tremendous loss to the City of Riverside, the Local Firefighters Union, and the community as a whole,” the city’s statement continued. “His contributions will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.”

Officials said a memorial service honoring Strack’s life and legacy would be announced soon.
