LOS ANGELES — Kern County Firefighter Greg Sliwinski lost his Altadena home in the Eaton Fire, which has burned more than 14,000 acres in and around Pasadena and Altadena.

Greg, his wife Annie, their 17-month-old son Mark, and two dogs escaped safely, but their home and belongings were destroyed.

With help from a GoFundMe campaign, the family secured a temporary rental in Monrovia. Coincidentally, the property owner of the rental house is a retired Los Angeles County Fire Department captain.

“We are safe and grateful for the support,” Greg said, thanking donors for helping cover rent and a security deposit.

Now, the Sliwinskis are focused on aiding their elderly neighbor, June Bottcher, who also lost her home. Bottcher, a longtime Altadena resident with no family or insurance, is staying in an Airbnb. Greg has increased the fundraising goal to help her rebuild.
