TEWKSBURY Mass. — A Marlborough woman is facing a slew of charges in connection with a Thursday crash in Tewksbury in which police say she hit another car while driving drunk and then punched a firefighter who responded to the crash.

Susan Kapopoulos, 58, has been charged with operating under the influence of liquor — third offense, leaving the scene of personal injury, leaving the scene of property damage, assault and battery on ambulance personnel, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, marked lanes violation, failure to wear a seatbelt and possession of a class B substance, according to a press release from Tewksbury police.

Officers responded to the crash at 10 Clark Road a little after 6:20 p.m. on July 11, police said. A dash cam video of the crash shared by police shows a white Honda CR-V failing to turn at a bend in the road and zooming across the opposite lane of traffic into a fenced-off area.

At the scene, officers found the SUV crashed into a tree and Kapopoulos unconscious in the driver’s seat, police said. First responders soon noticed that she smelled strongly of alcohol, wasn’t wearing a seat belt and that there were two open containers of alcohol in the SUV.

Kapopoulos eventually regained consciousness and at some point punched a firefighter who had responded to the crash, police said. Officers soon learned that, before crashing into the fence and tree, Kapopoulos had hit another car.

That car crashed approximately 500 feet up the road from Kapopoulos’ SUV, police said. The car’s driver was injured in the crash, but it’s unclear whether they were taken to a hospital.

Kapopoulos was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, police said. She was arraigned Friday in Lowell District Court and released on her own recognizance on the condition she abstain from drugs or alcohol.

No further information about the crash has been released.
