BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — A former U.S. Marine, corrections officer and firefighter was killed earlier this week after being contracted to fight in Ukraine.
Willy Joseph Cancel’s death is believed to be the first death of a U.S. citizen fighting in Ukraine. He was 22, the Record Online reported.
He served with the Walden Fire Department in New York and more recently was a corrections officer in Tennessee.
“Today is a sad day in our community with news reports of the death of Willy Cancel,” the Walden Fire Department posted on Facebook.
Cancel is survived by his wife and child.
