SUNBURY, Pa. — A fire captain with the Americus Hose Company has resigned after his social media post related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump went viral.

The fire department’s general manager, Bob Hare, said that firefighter Tony Bendele resigned from his position on July 15, The Daily Item reports. Bendele served as a fire captain.

In the now-removed post on X, Bendele said “Too bad it didn’t hit him square,” according to Shore News Network. The post was reported and flagged by X for bullying and harassment.

The post led to a bomb threat at the department, The Daily Item reported.

The city of Sunbury released a statement regarding the post:

“The city of Sunbury is aware of the situation involving a firefighter at a local fire company. Unfortunately, the fire department is an entity separate from the city itself. However, an investigation into the situation is ongoing at this time.”

The shooting happened Saturday during a rally held by the former president. Corey Comperatore, a former Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company chief, was killed and two others were wounded.
