CLEVELAND — Video shows a Cleveland teenager coming to the rescue of an entire family during a house fire on March 28, helping them escape before firefighters arrived.
The Cleveland Division of Fire said the fire began at approximately 11 a.m. at a home on the 130 block of Sacramento Avenue and quickly spread to a neighboring house, WJW reported.
At the time, a mother and her three children—aged 10 months, 7 years, and 12 years—were inside when the fire began.
Video captured the family stranded on the roof as thick smoke poured from the windows and flames erupted from the back of the house. In the footage, Sowden is seen grabbing a ladder and helping the children down to safety before fire crews arrive.
“I just got off work. I happened to hear screaming, so I looked over and saw a kid on the roof. That’s when I grabbed the ladder and saw the babies and the mom on the roof,” Sowden said. “I don’t even know what was going through my head to be honest with you. I just grabbed the ladder and ran.”
According to officials, the entire family made it out of the home safely and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
