PORTLAND, Ore. — Two construction workers rescued a person inside a burning home Monday morning in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood, fire officials said.

Portland Fire & Rescue personnel responded to a residential fire around 9:20 a.m. and arriving crews found smoke coming from the eaves of a single-story home that was behind another residence.

Firefighters made their way to the back of the home and noticed a significant blaze but were able to put it out within 10 minutes.

While investigating the fire, crews heard from bystanders that two construction workers aided in the rescue prior to their arrival. The workers, who were across the street, noticed the smoke and called 911.

According to the Fire Bureau , the workers also opened the front door of the home on fire, and thick smoke rolled out over their heads. They saw a person inside through the smoke crawling toward the front door and helped the person and their dog escape.

Crews evaluated the person on scene and sent them to a hospital, where they arrived in stable condition.
