NORTH ALBANY, Ore. — Firefighters made their own door to save a trapped resident during a house fire in North Albany.
Albany Fire Department responded at 4:52 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, to a residential fire on Green Acres Lane Northwest, according to an agency news release.
Arriving crews saw heavy flames at the front of the home with a significant amount of smoke coming from the front and east side of the building, according to the news release.
One homeowner and multiple neighbors were already outside and directed firefighters to a trapped homeowner on the east side of the home, the release states.
The height and size of a bathroom window prevented the trapped person from escaping, despite the risk to and efforts of assisting neighbors, the Fire Department said.
Using extraction tools, firefighters created a door from the widow, locating and rescuing the trapped resident, according to the release, which states “advanced medical aid” was provided before the person was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
The fire was reportedly extinguished by 6:50 a.m. A firefighter injured during suppression efforts was taken to Albany General Hospital for treatment and released, the news release states, and an Albany police officer was treated for smoke inhalation.
Two pet dogs did not survive the blaze, according to the release. Fire investigators were expected to work in the scene Monday in hopes of determining the cause and origin of the fire.
