SAN DIMAS, Calif. — Los Angeles County firefighters on Thursday freed an owl that got entangled in wire and rope at a water tower and was dangling upside down.

Capt. Steve Marquez of station 64 in San Dimas said they received a call at 3:20 p.m. about an injured owl stuck on the water tower in the 200 block of East Foothill Boulevard. The water tower is near the equestrian center.

But at about 40 feet off the ground, the bird was higher than firefighters could reach. They called station 86 in Glendora which has a truck with a 75-foot ladder.

Fire Capt. Ed Lazar and Firefighter Kevin Brown went up the ladder to help the owl. Lazar said one of the bird’s claws was caught in wiring and rope.

"(Brown) grabbed the owl’s leg and cut the wiring. We put her in a box. I carried the box,” Lazar said."I don’t think she’s doing too well. I hope it makes it.”

He said they handed the owl over to a lady at the equestrian center who said she would take care of the bird.

Lazar said underneath the water tower was a nest. They checked the nest for baby owls but found none. They spotted another owl during the rescue but it flew off.
