SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. — Firefighters rescued a man from a burning commercial building in San Bernardino after the flames cut off his escape route, leaving him trapped behind barred windows.
Personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to an exterior fire around 3 a.m. Wednesday that had downed a power line and spread to a nearby commercial business, believed to be a mattress store, on the 100 block of South Mt. Vernon Avenue, Battalion Chief Mike McClintock said.
Firefighters heard screams inside the building as crew members prepared to put out the fire, where an estimated 50 mattresses and other items were engulfed in flames outside the building.
The man declined treatment from firefighter paramedics after crews cut the metal bars and rescued him from the burning structure. Firefighters successfully limited the fire damage to the rear portion of the building, where the man had been staying, said McClintock.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
