On Sept. 26, 2019, the Rocky Mount (N.C.) Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial building fire. It took firefighters two minutes to get to the scene, where they found a 12,400-square-foot building with heavy fire and smoke showing. The furniture manufacturing company housed newly made hardwood furniture and equipment.
A call was placed for additional companies, and the incident ultimately required the assistance of all seven stations in the city and at least four nearby departments. More than 90 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The new fire chief for Rocky Mount, Corey Mercer, served as commanding officer at the scene.
As firefighters poured thousands of gallons of water onto the heavily involved structure, the roof eventually caved in.
It took firefighters over five hours to contain the fire. One firefighter sustained minor injuries.
