WASHINGTON — The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has released an updated version of What to Expect: A Guide for New Firefighter Families (Second Edition) to help new fire and EMS recruits and their families adjust to the volunteer fire service lifestyle.

Created by the NVFC Family Task Force, the guide introduces families to volunteer fire service basics, offering advice on maintaining strong relationships and becoming part of the fire department community. It also provides resources to help families navigate their new normal.

The guide includes a variety of family-oriented information, from the basics of being a volunteer firefighter or EMS provider to detailed information on behavioral health, fitness, nutrition, and a list of resources available to volunteer fire service families. The guide also covers five important steps in relationship communication as well as details about orienting children to the volunteer fire service and maintaining a healthy volunteer-parent balance.
