WASHINGTON — In recognition of National First Responders Day, President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation honoring the courage and dedication of first responders across the nation.

In his proclamation, Biden acknowledged several first responders who risk their lives every day.

“Our first responders represent the best of who we are as a people. They are the police officers and sheriff’s deputies who answer our calls, ready to help, no matter the situation. They are the firefighters running toward the flames to protect our communities. They are emergency medical technicians, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, 988 crisis responders, and all the medical professionals providing emergency care, who sacrifice so much to be there for us when a crisis hits,” Biden said in the proclamation.

A six-year push for the day of appreciation, inspired by heroism and tragedy, culminated in the designation of Oct. 28 to honor first responders

The proclamation highlighted the critical role first responders play, noting their bravery in responding to emergencies like the devastating Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene, where search and rescue teams saved countless lives. It also acknowledges their sacrifices, often made at great personal cost, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others.

“Our first responders are everyday heroes, and we are so grateful for their service,” Biden said.

National First Responder Day was started in 2019 by a bipartisan group of senators who successfully passed legislation to officially mark October 28 as a day to honor the service and sacrifice of those answering the call in their communities.
