CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston firefighter was injured Sunday when part a floor of an abandoned home fell on him and a mayday was called, WVNSTV reported.
Captain David Hodges said crews started suppression efforts at the abandoned residence and some firefighters started searching the structure for potential victims.
After firefighters completed a first-floor search, a large part of the second floor fell on Captain John Hastings.
Firefighters called a mayday and dug through rubble for about 10 minutes until they reached Hastings, an 18-year veteran of the department.
EMS providers transported Hastings to a hospital.
The TV station reported that he is in stable condition and alert.
