THOMPSON, N.Y. — An assistant chief with Forestburgh Fire Company #1 died after collapsing at the scene of a structure fire, the Times-Herald Record reported.

Assistant Chief William Steinberg, 37, was working at the scene of a mutual-aid call triggered by the Monticello Fire Department on Saturday when he reportedly collapsed. He was immediately treated by colleagues on scene and transported to Garnet Health Medical Center Catskill, where he died from an apparent heart attack, according to the USFA.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to William J. Steinberg’s family and the members of the Forestburgh Fire Company,” read a statement by the Forestburgh Fire District.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“It’s a very sad day in the fire service,” read a Facebook post by the Monticello Fire Department. “Thank you brother, we’ll take it from here.”
