WINCHESTER, Ind. — A firefighter died following a medical emergency while responding to a fire, the Winchester Fire Department stated in news release.
Firefighters responded to a working structure fire on Dec. 12 when Firefighter Rick Sanders, 48, began feeling unwell, according to the department.
Sanders exited the residence and on-scene medics quickly checked on him, determining he was suffering from cardiac arrest, the department said. Sanders was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his illness.
Sanders is survived by his wife, Billie, four children and four grandchildren with another grandchild on the way.
“His sacrifice for his community will never be forgotten,” the Winchester Fire Department said.
“Rick, from your brothers at WFD, we love you, we will miss you, and we thank you for paying the ultimate sacrifice for us and for the community around you,” the department continued.
