LAS VEGAS — A Los Angeles firefighter who was on vacation in Las Vegas when a deadly shooting occurred described the scene and how he jumped to action to help the wounded.
Robert Hayes and his wife were with friends attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival event for a birthday when the shooting that killed 50 people and injured over 400 occurred, according to a FOX News video.
“It was pretty much like a war scene inside,” Hayes said. “I’ve seen a lot of things in my day with the fire department; it was hard to see even the bodies outside down the street that were carried probably half a mile from the incident … it’s a very sad day on an event like this with something that never should have happened.”
When describing the shooting and the amount of people in the area, Hayes said “it was like shooting goldfish unfortunately.”
Hayes got his family and friends out of the concert and then went back in with the SWAT team and helped responders secure the area, including dragging bodies out of the arena.
“It’s just something we do,” Hayes said. I wasn’t trying to be a hero I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t leaving anybody behind.”
