RACINE, Wis. — A firefighter-paramedic for nearly 30 years and an assistant Boy Scout leader for 15, Steve Leger has dedicated himself to his community.

Now, he’s the one in need.

Leger was repairing a flagpole 35 feet in the air when his boom lift fell, according to the Journal Times.

The June 15 accident at Camp Anokijig in Sheboygan County left Leger in the intensive care unit at a nearby hospital.

Leger serves as camp nurse and volunteer at Camp Anokijig. At the time of his accident he was working to fix the flagpole’s pulley system.

Emergency helicopter service Flight for Life transported him to the hospital. Leger, the Journal Times reported, fractured both arms, his lower back and experienced internal head injuries and fevers.

Susan Leger on July 8 posted on caringbridge.org: “Hello Everyone. Steve is now off the ventilator and will be moving out of the ICU. Eyes still open when awake. Follows voices but no other connection. No response to commands. Thank you all for your prayers and the love you all have for Steve. I pass it on to him and let him know that when I come to see him, you all are there with me.”

“His external wounds from his fall are all healing. He’s improving, but it’s all baby steps,” Leger’s son Zach told the Journal Times.
