WASHINGTON — The International Association of Fire Fighters this week released a webinar focused on suicide awareness and prevention, reviewing the behavioral health resources available for firefighters, plus how to save a life in crisis.

IAFF General President Edward Kelly introduces the webinar, “Suicide Awareness in the Fire Service,” noting the unique challenges facing first responders and the toll these challenges can have on both physical and mental health:

“We can see and hear what most can only imagine, and we all know, what we experience on the job stays with us. The stresses from these experiences can build up and snowball. Left unaddressed, it could lead to severe issues, addiction, burnout, relationship problems and PTSD. Feeling stressed is natural, but suicidal thoughts are not a typical response to these challenges. Like any other problem, there are solutions.”

The webinar features three expert panelists:

  • Rachelle Zemlok, PSYD: Lexipol strategic wellness director and clinician
  • Lauren Kosc, LCPC, NCC: IAFF behavioral health program clinical coordinator
  • Brandon Dreiman, CAPRC: Indianapolis Fire Department captain and IAFF peer support instructor
