EDISON, N.J. — A 4-alarm fire broke out Tuesday night in a senior living community in Edison and left two people in critical condition, according to Edison Mayor Sam Joshi.

Local fire companies were at the facility, Inman Grove Senior Citizen Residence in Menlo Manor, and were still trying to evacuate everyone inside the building, Joshi said after 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The mayor initially reported one fatality, but later said on his Facebook page that one person “who was transported as a cardiac arrest fatal has regained a pulse but remains in critical condition.”

The mayor said one other person was also in critical condition after being pulled from the blaze.

He did not comment on any other possible injuries.

Pictures from the scene showed the fire broke out inside a five-story apartment building.

Dozens of fire trucks were on the scene. As of 8 p.m., the fire was out, but smoke damage could be seen on one side of the building.

“At this time we’re coordinating overnight stays for those who need,” Joshi said. “I’ve authorized a stay for seniors at a local hotel and will make sure every resident is attended to. Red Cross is also assisting.”

Other local officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
