IRVINGTON, N.J. — Five homes caught fire in Irvington Tuesday evening near the city’s border with Newark.

The fire broke out shortly before 5 p.m. in a vacant home at 71 Montgomery Ave. and units from both municipalities were called in to assist.

A second alarm was called at 5:20 p.m. with a third alarm called at 5:26 p.m. due to the fire extending to 65, 67, 73, and 75 Montgomery Ave., Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.

Pictures from the scene show firefighters from both municipalities trying to douse the flames.

Smoke poured from the houses as crews continued their attack on the blaze, which was finally brought under control at 6:51 p.m.

One man was injured and transported to University Hospital for treatment. The severity of his injuries was unclear, officials said.

No other injuries were reported, but nine families, including 26 adults and four children were forced from their homes, Fragé said.

The cause and origin of this fire is under investigation.
