KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two firefighters were hospitalized after battling a house fire Wednesday night in Kansas City.

Crews responded around 10:10 p.m. to the 700 block of Elmwood Avenue, where a fire was reported from a two-story vacant structure, according to Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department. When they arrived, the fire was spreading to nearby homes.

Additional crews arrived, and the fire was brought under control around 10:44 p.m.

Three firefighters reported injuries, and two of them were transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, Hopkins said.

One firefighter is being treated for a burn on the lower extremities, and the other is being treated for severe dehydration. Both firefighters will be further evaluated for other injuries, but they are in stable condition.

KCFD has called the Red Cross to assist two adults impacted by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
