BOSTON — Sixteen people were displaced after a three-alarm fire ripped through a multi-unit Jamaica Plain home during a frigid Saturday night, Boston Fire reported.
At about 11:15 p.m. Saturday night, Boston Fire responded to a fire in a large four-story apartment building on Boylston St. in Jamaica Plain.
At the scene, fire spread across “multiple floors and through the roof,” Boston Fire said. A second and third alarm were ordered “immediately.” Video from the scene shows flames shooting up out of the roof as smoke billows up. Temperatures dipped down into the low teens in Boston Saturday night.
“Firefighters were working under extreme conditions as the water froze instantly on the building and even on the street lights,” Boston Fire posted to X, formerly Twitter, early Sunday.
The department said firefighter crews used ground ladders and aerial ladders to the building “working around the multiple power lines.”
Just after midnight Sunday, firefighters reported “heavy fire is knocked down” and teams were continuing to “chase hot spots throughout the building.”
There were no injuries to report, Boston Fire Deputy Chief Gerard said in a media briefing around 1 a.m.
Sixteen residents of the building were displaced, Boston Fire said, and the Red Cross is assisting with housing. The fire did an estimated $1 million of damage, the department stated.
Boston Sparks assisted on the scene in the freezing temperatures, Boston Fire said. Firefighters remained on the scene through Sunday morning to monitor hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Boston Fire Investigation Unit, the department stated.
