Know your emergency elevator controls

It’s important to know an elevator’s emergency controls when heading into a potential elevator rescue.

Here are some operational tips to keep in mind when approaching an elevator’s firefighter-specific control panel.

Lobby switch operation:

  • The on button disregards hall signals to cars and returns all cars to the lobby floor.
  • The bypass button will deactivate fire and/or smoke detector controls to allow operations of cars by emergency service personnel.
  • Car switch operation:

  • The on button disconnects hall signals to car, allows manual select operation of car by floor buttons in car requiring constant pressure on the floor button until the door closes completely and car begins to travel. The car door may remain closed at selected floor, however the car door may be partially or completed opened by using the door open button on the control panel.
  • In emergencies, the bypass button allows the car to travel to the lobby floor with hoistway and car door open.
