SEATTLE — Seattle crews responded to 1,538 encampment fires in 2022, averaging 128 a month, according to the Seattle Fire Department.
The department reported 1,446 encampment fires last year and 854 in 2020, KOMO News reported Tuesday.
Seattle Fire Fighters Union IAFF Local 27 members told city leaders last year that firefighters were reporting being assaulted at encampment fires, which included being threatened with weapons.
Mayor Bruce Harrell included a budget item for a 50% increase in the department’s recruit class. His office said he will continue working on firefighter safety with the department and the union.
