FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. — A West Virginia Division of Forestry crewmember was killed Thursday while fighting a forest fire in Fayette County.
Forester Cody Mullens, 28, was struck by a falling tree and did not survive, according to a news release from the office of Gov. Jim Justice.
The Montgomery Fire Department described the response:
“The Fayette County vertical rescue team was dispatched and responded to assist. Chief 16 was in contact with our dispatchers and notified us that this was a member of the West Virginia Department of forestry. Multiple units responded with side by sides and manpower. Crews arrived on scene and met with the forestry members to gain further information. Members found that department of forestry member Cody Mullens succumb to his injuries. The Montgomery Fire Department sends our condolences to the family, forestry members, fire departments, and everyone involved. We ask that you keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers in this tough time.”
