SAN DIEGO — Four CAL FIRE firefighters from San Diego County on a strike team assignment in Tulare County were evaluated at a hospital after the fire engine they were riding in was involved in a roll-over crash Wednesday morning, officials said.
Three of the firefighters were released from the hospital by the afternoon while a fire captain who had been driving the wildland engine will remain overnight, said CAL FIRE spokesman Thomas Shoots.
Five engines and a battalion chief had left San Diego County on Sunday as part of the strike team to help backfill fire stations in Tulare County as crews up there fought the Creek fire, Shoots said.
The crew on the engine that crashed was planning to meet up and caravan back to San Diego Wednesday when the accident occurred around 8:30 a.m.
