GREENBELT, Md. — The 2024 Firefighter Safety Stand Down theme has been announced.
The theme – “Fire Training: Back to Basics” – emphasizes the importance of training by reinforcing proper strategies and tactics with a focus on the fundamentals, according to the National Volunteer Fire Council.
The 2024 Safety Stand Down, held June 16-22, will cover topics related to firefighter training and safety, including firefighter physical safety and preparedness as well as mental and emotional wellbeing. The week will be broken down into five daily focus areas:
- Building the foundation of a training program
- Assessing the needs of the community and department
- Safety during training
- Physical and mental health considerations
- The 10 commandments of firefighter training
The annual Safety Stand Down campaign aims to reduce the number of preventable injuries and deaths in the fire and emergency services. In support of Stand Down, responder agencies are encouraged to suspend all non-emergency activities during the campaign week to focus on training and education related to this year’s theme.
The Safety Stand Down website includes resources to help departments plan for the week’s activities. Additional tools including specific action plans will be released in the weeks prior to the event.
The Safety Stand Down is a joint initiative of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Safety, Health and Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA), and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).
