SOMERSWORTH, N.H. — A New Hampshire man used his Apple Watch to call 911 after falling into a frozen river.
William Rogers, 62, was ice skating about 40 feet from shore on Sunday when he fell into the freezing water, according to CBS Boston. Rogers was unable to pull himself back up and couldn’t reach his phone to call for help.
Rogers said he was losing strength and feared he would die when he remembered that he could make calls with his Apple Watch. Soon, Rogers was speaking with first responders through the wearable device.
Somersworth and Berwick firefighters responded and deployed a throw bag to bring Rogers to shore, officials said. An EMS unit then transported Rogers to the hospital for treatment.
Somersworth Professional Firefighters Local 2320 noted that personnel had recently completed an in-house ice water rescue program. Rogers said he credits both first responders and the watch for saving his life.
