PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia firefighter will not face discipline after giving a woman his SCBA as he rescued her from a warehouse fire Wednesday.
Firefighter Fran Cheney found Mary Jackson on the second floor of the warehouse last week, according to My Fox Philadelphia.
“I take a quick breath, rip my helmet off, give her the mask — it’s on positive pressure, which means it just blows smoke away from her and I just say, ‘Let’s go,’” Firefighter Cheney said.
“I was told that wasn’t very smart.”
Philly protocol tells firefighters not to share their air with anyone because of its possible effect on other firefighters, but Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said they had to view the situation in light of the results.
“We stop and we look at that and we say, the outcome is okay, because he’s safe- she’s safe,” he told My Fox Philadelphia.
As for Firefighter Cheney, he gave Jackson $500 in his overtime pay to help her get back on her feet.
“I’m not gonna let my decision cost someone else their life,” he said.
