PRESS RELEASE
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) initiated this North America-wide campaign to raise awareness of the growing dangers of home fires and the life-saving benefits of installing fire sprinklers in new homes. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) is supplying the demo trailer. The Glendale Fire Department will provide the crew and equipment.
Watch: Livestream event on YouTube.
Who:
- Lorraine Carli, HFSC President/NFPA VP of Outreach and Advocacy will host the event and talk about why home fires are so deadly and the vital role of home fire sprinklers.
- Zoe Susice, Senior Director, Research Amplification with the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), part of UL Research Institutes (ULRI), will discuss FSRI research on the effectiveness of fire sprinklers and the new Science of Home Fire Sprinklers resources from ULRI’s Office of Research Experiences and Education.
- Chief Josh Waldo, incoming IAFC President, will narrate a live fire and sprinkler side-by-side demonstration using a special trailer.
- Chief Brad Bradley, Northwest Fire District, will discuss a recent event where a home fire sprinkler extinguished a lithium-ion battery fire in Tucson.
What:
Home fires can become deadly in as little as two minutes due to the changing dynamic of our homes such as modern construction, furnishings and technology like the increasing presence of lithium-ion batteries. This live demonstration includes two identical rooms, one is protected with a fire sprinkler, the other is not. Viewers can see how quickly the fire becomes deadly in the unsprinklered room compared to the room protected with a fire sprinkler. Heat from the fire will activate the sprinkler and stop the fire and deadly toxic smoke from spreading. Fire sprinklers allow residents to safely escape, and they protect firefighters.
This event will take place during the International Association of Fire Chiefs Community Risk Reduction Leader Conference. More than 350 fire and life safety leaders will attend this conference.
