HAGERSTOWN, Md. — People in the unincorporated community of Fairplay will have to rely on firefighters from neighboring towns.
The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that the Washington County Commissioners voted Tuesday to indefinitely suspend operations of the Fairplay Volunteer Fire Co. because of its slow response times.
The county’s emergency services agency says Fairplay firefighters took 10 minutes or more to respond to 26 percent of their calls in the first five months of this year.
During the suspension, fire departments in Williamsport, Funkstown, Sharpsburg and Boonsboro will respond to calls in Fairplay.
A task force will work on a plan for re-establishing operations in Fairplay. The panel has a three-month deadline but County Commissioner William McKinley says it could finish up in half that time.
