HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The first African-American fire chief in the history of Washington County is getting his start at the Mt. Aetna Volunteer Fire Department.
The previous chief, Terry Stouffer, has dedicated 34 years of his life to the service, and is now retiring. “I decided that this year was going to be the year to let new faces and new ideas come into the company,” Stouffer said. But that doesn’t mean he’s walking out on his fellow firefighters. “I’m going to be Tony’s assistant chief, to help him where he needs it and where I can,” Stouffer said.
Stouffer is being replaced by Tony Veney, who is making history as the first African-American fire chief in the county’s history.
