SACATON, Ariz. — Deputy Fire Chief David Martin, of the Gila River (Ariz.) Fire Department, died unexpectedly Nov. 1.
Chief David Martin was a 21-year veteran and an original member of the full-time paid fire department. Prior to joining Gila River, Chief Martin served with Arizona’s Sun Lakes and Rural/Metro fire departments.
“We are shocked and saddened to learn about the passing of Deputy Chief Martin,” Stephen R. Lewis, the governor of Gila River Indian Community, said in a prepared statement. “Deputy Chief Martin’s dedication to our community’s fire service is evident in his years of dedicated service to GRIC.”
Chief Martin spent most of his career carrying out the mission and vision of the community through his open-minded approach to planning, according to a news release from the GRIC.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Martin’s friends, family and co-workers,” Chief Thomas Knapp said. “His service and sacrifice to the community will never be forgotten and he will be greatly missed. Dave has made substantial contributions to the department that surpasses the time served.”
Visitations will be Sunday and the funeral will be held Monday. Public safety departments wishing to participate should contact Robby Rodriguez at 928-450-1417.
