WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A firefighter was applauded for his actions after catching a baby during an apartment fire Thursday.

Firefighters responded to an apartment fire where two adults and a baby were trapped on a balcony surrounded by thick black smoke.

Lt. Anthony Miller arrived to the scene and told the family to drop the infant to him, reported WMC Action News.

“I told them ‘throw the baby. Just throw the baby,’” Lt. Miller said. He safely caught the infant; several moments later, the couple descended from a ladder.

Lt. Miller, a 22-year veteran, said it was the first time he’s ever had a family toss him a baby.

“That’s a hero. He’s done a great job. I’m proud of him and that’s what we get paid to do,” Battalion Chief Charles Stover said.
