EVANSTON, Ill. — A new $800,000 purple and white firetruck has joined the Evanston Fire Department fleet thanks to a donation by Northwestern University.

According to a news release from the university, the collaboration between the city and university began in 2021 when Mayor Daniel Biss and City Councilmember Clare Kelly reached out to Northwestern’s Senior Executive Director for Neighborhood and Community Relations Dave Davis about the need for a new firetruck for the city.

Northwestern donated $800,000 in late 2021 to the city for the purchase of the new truck and the decision was made in 2022 to design the truck with the university colors.

“This is our way of showing gratitude to Northwestern for the continuous collaboration between our fire department and the University over the years,” Evanston Fire Chief Polep said. “Painting the truck in Northwestern colors is a symbolic gesture of our shared values and partnership in ensuring the safety and security of our community. We’re proud of how it turned out.”

The news release also stated the university has supported the Evanston Fire Department since it’s first gift of a firetruck in 1970. Since then, the university has donated other truck and ambulances as well as hosting training sessions at university facilities.

The donation follows months of back and forth between Northwestern and the city about the planned rebuild and use of Ryan Field. Plans for the rebuild and use of the stadium for six annual concerts were approved by City Council with Biss breaking a tied vote for the rezoning that would allow for concerts.

Residents opposed to the project along with the Most Livable City Association have since filed a lawsuit and Wilmette is considering one as well.

“The University is immensely proud of our enduring partnership with the City of Evanston,” said Davis. “As we celebrate this milestone, I am filled with optimism about the future of our partnership and the positive impact it will continue to have on the lives of those who live, work, learn and play in Evanston .”

The city sent out a similar news release to the university saying the fire department is looking forward to using the new vehicle and equipment to enhance community safety and serve city residents.
