FDNY announces new Twitter handle

The department will post up-to-the-second information on fires and emergencies in New York using the new Twitter handle

NEW YORK — Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro today announced the launch of a new Twitter handle – @FDNYAlerts – to provide up-to-the-second information on fires and emergencies in New York City.

@FDNYAlerts will operate 24/7, providing New Yorkers with official, automated alerts regarding ongoing Fire Department operations. This account exists solely to inform New Yorkers about incidents and FDNY responses within the five boroughs. @FDNYAlerts does not replace 911 calls and is not a means for reporting emergencies to the Department.

“@FDNYAlerts will provide the Department a vital platform to update New Yorkers about the difficult and dangerous work FDNY members perform 24-hours a day,” said Commissioner Nigro. “We will continue to use every tool at our disposal – from presentations at community events to social media – to inform, educate and improve the safety of all New Yorkers.”

The Department’s original Twitter handle – @FDNY – will remain active for its more than 150,000 followers; continuing to provide fire and life safety information, news and photos from FDNY incidents and events, and an opportunity for New Yorkers and followers from around the world to actively engage with the department.

FDNY is active on multiple social media platforms including, Facebook.com/FDNY and on Instagram with the handle, @FDNY.
