MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two Memphis Fire Department EMTs have been relieved of duty pending the results of an internal investigation in connection to Tyre Nichols’ death, WMC reported Monday.

Nichols, 29, was arrested on Jan. 7 and died three days later.

Five Memphis Police Department officers have been fired for excessive use of force, failure to intervene and failure to render aid.

The fire department said the two employees were involved in Nichols’ initial care.

At a community meeting, council member J.B. Smiley told Action News 5 that the two MFD employees relieved of duty are EMTs.

“There is concern if they were not there in a timely manner, and they didn’t do what they were supposed to do,” said council member Patrice Robinson.
