NEWARK, N.J. — A nonprofit that pays off mortgages for the families of first responders killed in the line of duty will be providing financial support to the loved ones left behind by the two veteran Newark firefighters killed in a deadly fire at Port Newark.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced Wednesday it will pay off the mortgage on the Union family home of fallen firefighter Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr., 49, and also provide financial support to the fiancée of deceased firefighter Augusto “Augie” Acabou, 45.
Brooks Jr. and Acabou died on July 5 after they were trapped aboard the Grande Costa D’avorio, a cargo ship carrying vehicles berthed near Export and Marsh streets in the city, where a fire broke out.
Brooks Jr. leaves behind his wife, Michele, and two daughters. Acabou was engaged and living with his fiancée.
Brooks Jr. had 16 years of service and was from Ladder 4 Tour 1. Acabou had nearly 10 years of service and was a member of Engine 16 Tour 1, according to city officials.
“These two heroes had more than a quarter century of service to their community, impacting a countless number of lives,” Tunnel to Towers Chairman and CEO Frank Siller said in a press release. “This tragedy is a reminder that there are no routine calls. Firefighters risk their lives every time they answer a call. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation will honor the bravery of Agusto Acabou and Wayne Brooks by supporting the loved ones they left behind.”
The death of both men sent shockwaves throughout the city of Newark and even prompted a call from President Joe Biden.
Funerals for both men will be held later at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
