PHOENIX — A fire captain who suffered a traumatic brain injury on duty eight years ago died Saturday.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Crystal Rezzonico was seriously injured when she was ejected from her fire truck after it was struck by another vehicle Aug. 10, 2009. She suffered multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
Rezzonico was in a coma for two weeks and underwent five brain surgeries. Despite her injuries, Rezzonico returned to duty after completing intense rehab.
“Her loss brings us great pain but also great peace to know that our beloved sister and her family suffer no more,” the Phoenix Fire Fighters Union wrote on Facebook. She served the department for 23 years.
Rezzonico’s death is expected to be classified as a line of duty death.
