ROCKY MOUNT, Va. — A firefighter died April 19 after responding to two fire calls the day before.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Herbert Tyler “Butch” Wilcox, 77, was examined by a doctor for neck and back pain after he responded to the calls and was sent home.
The next morning, Wilcox’s wife found him unresponsive. She called 911 and responders attempted to revive him with CPR, but he was pronounced dead after 30 minutes.
The cause of Wilcox’s death is undetermined.
“He in fact was a pillar in our department; one that can never be replaced,” the department said in a Facebook post. “One only hopes to follow the path that he himself has laid for Department 1.”
