NEW YORK — New York City is evacuating neighbours of an under construction 90-storey luxury Manhattan skyscraper as a crane atop it partly collapsed, leaving its arm precariously perched and dangling over the street.
The evacuation came after powerful winds from the monstrous storm, Sandy, blew through New York City and caused the crane’s collapse.
The crane is hanging precariously about 1,000 feet over busy West 57th Street. It’s part of the construction of the $1.5 billion residential tower called One57.
New York Police and fire crews were on the scene, and part of the street had been closed off as a precaution, CNN reported citing police.
The evacuation zone covers all buildings north and south of 57th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, in addition to buildings on 56th Street, according to New York Fire Department.
As of Monday evening, Le Parker Meridien hotel, on West 56th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues, was being evacuated. Guests were being moved to another hotel.
