WASHINGTON — A grand jury indicted a 23-year-old D.C. firefighter Thursday on murder charges stemming from a fatal street racing crash in July.
The Washington Post reported that off-duty firefighter Ryan Thompson was racing another driver, Rasheed Murray, 28, when Thompson’s car slammed into an SUV. The crash killed 24-year-old Matthew Roth, who was not involved in the race.
Roth’s father said he wants justice for his son.
“We’re going to be suffering for the rest of our lives and they should suffer also,” Matthew Roth said. “These weren’t two young kids who didn’t know better. These were two adults.”
Thompson and Murray were charged with second-degree murder and reckless driving. Murray remains jailed; Thompson surrendered to police and was freed pending a court hearing Dec. 17.
Thompson was hired by D.C. Fire and EMS in 2011 and was put on leave by the department.
