NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — At least two workers were hospitalized after a pier collapsed in New Bedford on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 11, according to the New Bedford Fire Department.

The collapse at the end of Hervey Tichon Avenue was reported shortly after 2 p.m., according to a Facebook post from the department.

A 225-by 36-foot portion of a bulkhead that was under construction fell into the water, injuring four workers. A construction lift and loader were also involved in the collapse.

One worker was pulled from the water and later brought to St. Luke’s Emergency Department by rescue boat. Another worker was also brought to the hospital, officials added.

Both had non-life threatening injuries, ABC6 reported. The other two workers were treated onsite. All other workers were accounted for, officials said.

The Fairhaven Fire Department Marine Unit, New Bedford Police Marine Unit, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and Fairhaven Harbormaster all helped with getting debris out of the water and controlling a fuel spill.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection were also onsite. The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.
