NY firefighter charged with starting brush fire

The fire destroyed nine acres and took nine local fire companies five hours to get it under control

WAPPINGER, N.Y. — A firefighter from Wappinger is accused of arson in connection to a fire that happened in a secluded area near the Dutchess Rail Trail.

Nicholas C. Hughes, 24, a firefighter with the East Fishkill Fire District, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony, and willfully setting a forest fire, a felony, and fifth-degree arson, a misdemeanor.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said Hughes intentionally set the fire that took five hours and nine fire departments to put out. Police say there were no injuries or damage to the rail trail.
