DAYTON, Ohio — We didn’t see this one coming.

Lay’s Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger chips beat out Dayton firefighter Matt Allen’s Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese chips for top prize in Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor"contest.

Lay’s received about 14 million submissions in this year’s contest that ask fans for chip flavors. The company picked four finalists and held an online popular vote.

The contest’s winner, Wasabi Ginger chips creator Meneko Spigner McBeth from Deptford, New Jersey, was notified at a special dinner Monday for contestants, according to the Associated Press.

She will receive $1 million for edging out Allen and the creators of Lay’s Cappuccino and Lay’s Wavy Mango Salsa.

Each runner-up — Allen included — will receive $50,000. It’s not a million, but who wouldn’t take it?

The Troy resident and new father came up with chip recipe with the help of his wife.
