WOLFEBORO, N.H. — Members of the Wolfeboro Fire/Rescue Department will wear pink T-shirts over their uniform blues this October as they commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Department members will wear pink department T-shirts with the message, “Wolfeboro Firefighters for a Cause,” and the iconic pink ribbon design.

Members will staff a table in front of Hunter’s Shop n Save and solicit donations on Oct. 6. All proceeds will be donated to the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition.

It was Administrative Assistant Sherri Moore who orchestrated the team effort to raise money and awareness about this disease.

She and fellow staff members have all had friends or relations that have been affected by breast cancer. In her case, her grandmother, stepmother and a close family friend were stricken with breast cancer.

“We walked all the way through finding the first lump to treatment and recovery,” said Moore.

Moore said the NH Breast Cancer Coalition was chosen as the recipient organization to keep the money local. “We wanted to keep it local, with the money staying in the state and helping women who can’t get or can’t afford certain services,” she said. “And who doesn’t like to see the guys dressed in pink.”

She said the NH Breast Cancer Coalition has a Support Services Fund that provides financial assistance to patients who have exhausted all other options.

Firefighters will staff the table on Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will have a collection on Halloween at the Public Safety Building during the regular “Trick or Treat” hours from 5 to 7 p.m.

Staff will present a slide show depicting New Hampshire area cancer survivors, a group that includes one local resident.

Donation checks should be made to the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition (or NHBCC) and can be mailed to the Wolfeboro Fire/Rescue Department, P.O. Box 629, Wolfeboro, or dropped off at the Public Safety Building, 251 S. Main St., any time during the month.
