WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem firefighter was injured when a fire truck responding to an MVC overturned after reportedly hitting a patch of black ice, according to the Winston-Salem Fire Department.

Ladder 19 was responding to a crash on Dec. 3 on Glenn Hi Road when it overturned, WXII 12 reported.

Assistant Chief Andrew Gray said the icy patch caused the truck’s front tire to slip off the road, causing it to roll onto the driver’s side in a nearby field.

Gray said the injured firefighter is recovering.

“After the accident happened, some of the citizens pulled over and were over there trying to help get them out of the apparatus, help them get out the windows or out the windshield,” Gray said. “So, whoever those citizens are, I appreciate them taking the time.”

The fire truck also struck utility wires, causing a transformer to fall and causing power outages for some homes.

Because motorists forget how to drive in winter weather, firefighters need to take extra safety measures on MVAs
