ST. GEORGE, La. — A young deer that wasn’t “caught in headlights,” but between two metal posts of a large gate, was safely rescued by St. George Fire Department crews on Monday night.

Homeowners who found the deer trapped in their gate at about 8 p.m. went to a nearby St. George fire station for help.

While some firefighters assembled the tools they’d need for the rescue at the home in the 19400 block of Hoo Shoo Too Road, the others tried to calm the deer.

A firefighter using a hydraulic “jaws of life” tool was able to spread the metal bars enough so the deer could make its escape, the fire department said on social media.

There were no injuries to man or beast.

“Who says firefighters only fight fire...,” the fire department said.

A fire department spokesperson said the family of the deer “waited patiently in the distance for the baby to be freed.”
